Meet Chris Williamson, a 3rd Year Finance Student, and January’s Sauderite of the Month.

1. Who is Chris Williamson?
Soccer player, skier, surfer and 3rd year Finance student from Edmonton, Alberta!

2. Can you tell us more about the UBC Tie Supply?
UBC Tie Supply is a business idea that myself and two other friends (also Sauder students) came up with when we were buying our first suits at the beginning of our first year. We noticed how incredibly expensive menswear accessories were, and decided that spending 30 to 40 bucks on an accessory that would only be worn at most 5-10 times a year, especially on a student budget, was not ideal.

One of the partners is from Mainland China, so we were determined that we would source our ties from this location as it gave us the most amount of autonomy in design and control while allowing us to maintain our target low price points.

We designed the ties ourselves and put our own brand on it – Gentleman’s Supply.

The ties were well received by the students and some faculty, and we cleared our costs almost immediately. It felt awesome helping students on tight budgets to get fashionable gear as it helps with confidence and style.

It was nice being able to put some of the skills we learned in classes to use, like producing and distributing marketing materials and using computer programs to design our ties. I was also able to practice accounting and cost controlling, until my laptop with all the data was stolen…

Overall, it was a great experience, I learned a lot and was able to make money and have a good time with my friends doing it!
